The James Splawn family of Rutherford Co. NC
James married Elizabeth Robbins, and was named in her father's will in 1816.
I think James Splawn and Elizabeth Robbins Splawn were already married but living with her parents, William and Sarah Robbins in 1800. Census record follows:

1810 shows two different James SPLAWNs on page 134,  00100-20010; and 00020-00010; The first one is probably the one married to Elizabeth Robbins, and  on page 133 Peggy 10000-11111-00-1/100/50; and Moses 20110-20010-00-1/100/50-1/100/50

1820 the census finds the following:

Stephen D. 9 yrs old, William M. 6 yrs old, James M. 1 yr old, three daughters Sarah age 5, Litha age 6? Sebary age 12 or 17?]

Oct 19th 1830--Rutherford Co., NC Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions p. 68. "Ordered by court, upon examination of his person, that James Splawn be exempted from the payment of a poll tax and that certificate of this order be issued to him."

Note: Many researchers believe that William's father was named William based on Voter Registration records of 1904. These records, known as the grandfather clause, required voters to name their ancestor who was a registered voter in 1867, shortly after the Civil War when only white men were allowed to vote. William responded William to the question because he was the registered voter himself.
