Sian C. Crelia 1845-1919
Sian Carter Crelia was born in May 1845 in White
Co. Tenn.
At age 5, Sian Carter was living with his father James T. Creeley
(age 64), his mother, Levicey; and his sister Margarett (age 1) according
to the census records of 1850. Abstracts from court records inVan Buren
Co. TN indicate that on 1/1/1849 William, Sion C. and Marion Creely were
brought to court. William and Sion C. to be returned to their mother. Marion,
age 16 last November, was bound to M. T. Gillentine. And on 5/7/1849 William
Creely was bound to William C. Haston. and S.C. Creely was to be maintained
by Solomon Reece.
Sian Carter is found on the 1860 census in the home of Solomon
Reece in Carroll Co. Ark. In 1861, he enlisted in the Confederate army
with the Cherokee Division led by Stand Watie.* He was in Co. A, Cooper's
Battallion, Stand Watie Division, Cherokee Department, according to his
pension application dated Jan 4, 1910.
The following account shows his whereabouts in Feb 1865.
"The springs first reached the dignity of a health resort toward
the close of the Civil War. Dr. Jackson was frequently called upon by the
sick and wounded of both armies, among whom was Maj. J. W. Cooper, of
Cooper's battalion, Cherokee brigade, Confederate army. This officer contracted
rheumatism and chronic malarial poison while campaigning in the Southwest,
and having obtained leave of absence, he came to Dr. Jackson, in February,
1865. As this section was then occupied by the Federals it became necessary
to take refuge in the mountain fastnesses; and a party, consisting of
the Doctor, the Major, William Nichols, Sine Creeley, and two others,
took refuge in the "rock house," near the present site of the Southern
Hotel. Here they lived in archaic simplicity, and in a few months the
soldiers had completely recovered." Sian C. Crelia surrendered on June
4, 1865 at Jasper, Newton County, Arkansas and was paroled.
Sian married about 1869 . His wife was Sarah
Ann Wilmoth Lucas who was born Aug 1844 in TN, and died Jan 2, 1908 in
Carter, Parker Co. TX. She had two children by Mr. Lucas. I have not located
Sian Carter and his family on 1870 census, but believe they were in Arkansas
because children listed on 1880 census, born through about 1879 were born
in Arkansas.
SC Crelia stated on his pension application
that he came to Hunt Co. TX on the 18th of Nov. 1879.
In 1880, the family is located in Hunt Co, TX with
six children.
In 1900 - Sian, age 59, is on the Parker Co. TX
census with Sarah (age 55) and they have been married 31 years.
In 1908 Sarah died Jan 2 in Carter, Parker, TX
of pneumonia . She was buried in Dobbs Cemetery, Parker Co. TX.
See photo below.
In 1910 Sian lived in Fort Worth at 2019 Ross Ave.
and had been there for two years.
Then in 1919 on Feb. 24, SC Crelia died in the
home of his son, LA [Lucian Alvin 'Lush'] Crelia, Rt 1, Leonard, Fannin,
TX and after Feb. 25 was buried at Dobbs Cemetery (now called Clark Cemetery),
near Weatherford, Parker County, TX.
Sian and Sarah had eight children:
William Marion, Vicie Ellen, Mattie Crelia, Robert Edgar, Anna Laura Lee,James
Augustus "Gus", Alonzo"Lon", and Lucian Alvin.
